Developments of the theory of spin fluctuations and spin fluctuation-induced superconductivity
Theory of spin fluctuations as developed in the past 30 years have played important roles in the theory of magnetism in metals, particularly in elucidating the properties around the magnetic instability or quantum critical points. Recently the theory has been extended to deal with the spin fluctuaion-mediated superconductivity with anisotropic order parameters in strongly correlated electron sy...
متن کاملPunctuated Non-Equilibrium and Niche Conservatism Explain Biodiversity Fluctuations through the Phanerozoic (Including Supplement)
1 Fluctuations in biodiversity, both large and small, are pervasive through the fos2 sil record, yet we do not understand the processes generating them. Here we use a 3 novel extension of theory from non-equilibrium statistical physics to show that three 4 universal properties of macroevolution—punctuated adaptive radiation, niche conser5 vatism and resultant heterogeneity of diversification ra...
متن کاملLevy and set theory
Azriel Levy (1934–) did fundamental work in set theory when it was transmuting into a modern, sophisticated field of mathematics, a formative period of over a decade straddling Cohen’s 1963 founding of forcing. The terms “Levy collapse”, “Levy hierarchy”, and “Levy absoluteness” will live on in set theory, and his technique of relative constructibility and connections established between forcin...
متن کاملEquilibrium and Non-equilibrium Quantum Field Theory
We first focus in Chapter 2 on infrared effects in finite–temperature quantum field theory. We propose a simple mathematical method (based on the largest–time equation and the Dyson–Schwinger equations) which allows systematic calculations of the change of density in energy/particles in heat–bath during a scattering/decay of external particles within the heat bath. A careful analysis reveals th...
متن کاملThermal Fluctuations in Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics
Thermal fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures in stationary nonequilibrium states are spatially long ranged. This long-ranged nature of the non-equilibrium fluctuations is caused by a coupling between hydrodynamic modes through the non-equilibrium fluxes or gradients. The phenomena are discussed with some illustrative examples in fluids and fluid mixtures.
